Johnny Stewart makes Manx history; Klaus and Altendorfer retire

Johnny Stewart could make history in the Senior Manx Grand Prix. No rider has ever won every race at this event, and the Scot has a good chance of turning a new page in the history books. He had already secured victory in the Sportbike MGP and Supersport MGP on Saturday, and on Sunday he added another triumph in the Junior MGP.

Two German-speaking riders also put in impressive performances in his ‘slipstream’. On their debut at the infamous Snaefell Mountain Course, German Honda rider Moritz Klaus, finishing 13th, and Austrian Suzuki rider Thomas Altendorfer, finishing 28th, secured one of the coveted Clubman Bronze Replicas.

As befits a ‘proper’ Scot, he was accompanied by a bagpiper whilst preparing for the start. Motivated by the music, the Ducati rider stormed off. His rivals were left in his wake. After the first of four laps, his lead over Eddy Wormald stood at more than twelve seconds.

Whilst Klaus parked his motorbike by the roadside after jumping over Ballaugh Bridge, Altendorfer clocked his fastest lap to date with a time of 19:52.747 minutes. The fact that his girlfriend has accepted the marriage proposal he made after the Supersport race seems to spur on the 29-year-old mechatronics engineer from Upper Austria.

Stewart steadily extends his lead

At the halfway stage, Stewart has extended his lead to over 27 seconds. Only a technical problem could prevent him from securing another victory today. Behind him, the positions are settled. Wormald is second, ahead of Graham McAleese, Owen Monaghan and Harley Rushton. Andrew Farrell loses 7th place because changing his visor is taking too long.

Never before has a rider dominated the Manx Grand Prix quite like Stewart, whose aim ahead of the event was to win at least once. There isn’t a single section that he hasn’t completed as the fastest. He virtually has one hand on the winner’s trophy already, as his nearest rival is more than half a minute behind going into the final lap.

With victory assured, Stewart limits himself over the final 60.725 kilometres to maintaining his lead without taking any unnecessary risks. To the sound of bagpipes, he is able to savour this historic moment. Second place goes to Wormald, with McAleese finishing third. Altendorfer does not cross the finish line. He retires on the third lap.
