Michael Dunlop snatches the title from Chris Meyer at the last moment

No sooner had he returned from Armoy – where his commanding victory in the Moto3 class race had propelled him to the top of the Ulster Road Racing Championship standings – than German rider Chris Meyer should have been on his way again to the races in Mid Antrim to successfully defend his title.

“As I might be racing at La Baneza again next weekend and that, combined with the Manx Grand Prix in the middle of the month, would be too stressful, I’ve decided to stay at home. Besides, I need to work on my Twin,” the globetrotter told SPEEDWEEK.com, explaining his decision not to race in Northern Ireland.

Michael Dunlop, of course, didn’t let this opportunity pass him by. The 36-time Tourist Trophy winner lived up to his role as favourite and won the class at Mid Antrim. With this triumph, the Northern Irishman snatched the championship crown from Meyer at the very last moment. The points were enough for the Saxon to secure the runners-up spot.

It was a successful day of racing for Dunlop all round. The road racing ace also came out on top in both Supersport races as well as the Superbike race. As he had done at Cookstown and Tandragee, the maverick superstar secured four victories. This brings his total number of wins in Irish road races to 143.
