Moto3, Race: Maximo Quiles wins – drama for German Intact team

KTM-Ajo rider Brian Uriarte secured pole position in qualifying at the Red Bull Ring. Intact riders David Almansa and Alvaro Carpe also secured places on the front row of the grid. World Championship leader Maximo Quiles had to settle for fourth on the grid. He was flanked by Matteo Bertelle and Scott Ogden. The Brit had once again dawdled in Q2 and was consequently forced to serve a long-lap penalty during the race.

Joel Kelso, Joel Esteban and David Munoz started the race from the third row. The Intact rider is making his comeback at Spielberg after more than three months. Munoz had broken his hip in a crash during the Moto3 race in Hungary.

The Austrian Leo Rammerstorfer started his home Grand Prix from 20th on the grid. Ironically, it was at his home Grand Prix that he had to serve a long-lap penalty – Rammerstorfer had caused Nicola Carraro to crash at the Misano Grand Prix.

It was a bitter blow for Bertelle: he had to push his bike from the grid back to the pits because the engine had cut out.

Almansa got off to the best start, taking the lead ahead of Uriarte, Carpe and Quiles. However, Almansa was forced to drop back a position after overshooting the track limits at Turn 1. Shortly afterwards, he retook the lead – a perfect move by the Spaniard.

Almansa set the fastest lap of the race, and the leading quartet had already pulled slightly clear by the start of lap 3. Quiles overtook Brian Uriarte.

Ogden had to complete a second long-lap penalty because he had completed the first one too early. Quiles set the fastest lap of the race and was now the closest challenger to Almansa.

Rammerstorfer completed his long lap. He dropped back to the rear of the field.

By the fourth lap, Almansa and Quiles had pulled out a lead of just under a second. Uriarte overtook his team-mate Carpe to join the chase for the top two.

Quiles set another fastest lap. By lap 6, the leading duo’s lead had already grown to one and a half seconds. Almansa then set a fastest lap.

Joel Esteban, who was in fifth place, received a long-lap penalty for exceeding the track limits.

Lap 7: Almansa’s front wheel slipped out in Turn 2. His race was over. A bitter blow for the Spaniard and Intact-GP. Quiles took the lead and was 1.8 seconds ahead of Uriarte.

One lap later, Rico Almela crashed on lap 6. The Finn had been in fourth place. David Muñoz inherited fourth place.

The order at the halfway point of the race: Quiles, Brian Uriarte, Carpe, Muñoz and Pratama. Esteban had completed his long-lap penalty and was in ninth place afterwards. Rammerstorfer was in 23rd place.

Muñoz was running around six seconds behind the KTM Ajo duo.

Lap 11: Quiles led with a two-second lead over Uriarte and Carpe. Muñoz was a further seven seconds behind. The Spaniard was putting in an impressive performance on his comeback. Rammerstorfer had moved up to 22nd place.

Lap 14: Quiles’ lead remained steady at two seconds. Muñoz dropped back to seventh place. Pratama, O’Shea and Esteban had overtaken him. The group was bunched closely together. Uriarte and Carpe had a lead of over ten seconds over the group of seven riders.

With five laps to go, Munoz crashed in Turn 4 as Pratama tried to squeeze past on the inside. It was a tough manoeuvre by Pratama, and the stewards reviewed the incident. Esteban was handed a second long-lap penalty for once again breaching the track limits.

With four laps to go, Quiles’ lead had shrunk to 1.5 seconds. Pratama was handed a long-lap penalty for his manoeuvre against Munoz. Munoz returned to his pit and immediately clutched his left elbow.

With three laps to go, Adrian Fernandez crashed at Turn 10. Rammerstorfer was in 20th place. Pratama did not complete his long-lap penalty correctly – he had to do it again.

On the final lap, Quiles’ lead stood at over two seconds. Uriarte had pulled away from his team-mate Carpe by over four seconds. Carpe, in turn, had a lead of over 13 seconds over the chasing group, led by O’Shea. Pratama completed his second long lap – this time correctly.

Maximo Quiles took the win ahead of Brian Uriarte and Alvaro Carpe. Eddie O’Shea held on to fourth place as he crossed the finish line.
