Lukas Tulovic in the 2027 World Superbike Championship: “I don’t have hundreds of thousands of euros”

At the 2025 Superbike World Championship season finale in Jerez, German champion Lukas Tulovic was given his first chance to compete. Now the 26-year-old is making a fresh attempt to turn heads.

“I hope this will help me make a good impression,” said Lukas Tulovic ahead of his debut in the World Superbike Championship in October 2025 at Jerez, when he was allowed to take part as a wildcard rider on the Ducati factory team’s test bike. He finished 17th in the first race and 16th in the Superpole race on Sunday morning. The World Championship outing, organised by his team boss Matthias Moser, came to an end earlier than planned in the second race following a crash at Turn 1.

Even back then, Tulovic told SPEEDWEEK.com that he wanted to move to the World Superbike Championship in 2027 – having secured the IDM title in 2025, the Eberbach-based rider needs new goals. He currently leads the Euro Moto championship with a 34-point lead over Marcel Schrötter (BMW); no wildcard entries in the World Superbike Championship are planned for this year with his team, Triple-M Ducati Frankfurt, as this would require a suitable World Championship machine.

Lukas Tulovic is trying a different approach

That is why the 2022 Moto2 European Champion has taken a different route. “We’ve made a very serious effort,” said Tulovic of his World Championship ambitions. “Coming from the IDM, however, it’s difficult even with a title win, because that isn’t the typical pool from which riders move up to WSBK. That’s why I’ll be competing in the Italian Championship at Misano next weekend; the underlying idea and plan is to showcase myself on a different stage. In the hope that this will somehow pave the way for me to the Superbike World Championship. There’s a lot of movement in the rider market; there are a few from MotoGP who might potentially move to the Superbike World Championship. That doesn’t make it any easier for me to get there. And everyone wants to ride a Ducati, because the V4R is the benchmark. The situation is very difficult, but looking ahead, my next goal is to race there.”

I’d love to get on the podium straight away.

Tulovic will be competing at Misano for Team B-Max, for whom Michael Ruben Rinaldi also rides and which has already made several – unsuccessful – wildcard appearances in the World Superbike Championship. “The plan is also to race in the final round at Vallelunga, though that doesn’t take place until October,” the Ducati rider added to SPEEDWEEK.com. “I want to put in some good performances and ideally get straight onto the podium. Let’s see if I can achieve even more than that. Let’s see if that’s a step forward and gets me more in the spotlight. It’s not possible to buy my way into a team for several hundred thousand euros, so I have to earn a place through my performance – that’s what I’m aiming for.”

In the Italian Championship, after 6 of 12 races, Alessandro Delbianco (Yamaha) leads with 120 points, ahead of Michele Pirro (Ducati) on 95 and Samuele Cavalieri (Ducati) on 90. Rinaldi is in 9th place with 37 points.

As things stand, there will be seven teams in the Superbike World Championship in 2027. Tulovic has no chance of securing a place with the Aruba.it works team, Barni, Marc VDS or Advocates. And the remaining teams – Motocorsa, Go Eleven and MGM – are demanding a very high entry fee.
