Garrett Gerloff (Kawasaki) after the Baldassarri crash: ‘The main thing is to be fit’

Garrett Gerloff appeared remarkably confident ahead of the race in Cremona, announcing in the run-up to the event that he intended to be ‘right up there’ in the fight for the lead. His Kawasaki team had tested on the Italian circuit for two days each in June and August to ensure they were fully prepared for the home race.

Finishing eighth (!), the Texan was the best non-Ducati rider on Friday. Gerloff, who had also secured a place in Superpole, finished fifth in the first race – once again the best rider on a different make. Impressive.

However, a crash in the Superpole race made his task for the second race more difficult, and he managed an eighth-place finish after starting from 11th on the grid.

“It wasn’t exactly the easiest Sunday,” groaned the Kawasaki rider. “In the sprint race, I got off to a good start and, I think, managed to work my way up to seventh place. Then, in Turn 7, there was a collision between Baldassarri and me, and we both crashed. I was thrown about quite violently, so I’m just glad to have come away unscathed.”

The incident was investigated by race control, as the Italian appeared to have caused the crash through over-zeal. Later, however, the incident was classified as a normal racing accident. For Gerloff, however, it had more consequences than just a poorer starting position.

“In the second race, I gave it my all. I got off to another good start, but struggled a bit. I felt a bit stiff and was riding a bit tensely,” explained the 31-year-old. “Perhaps my body was just tense. I tried to relax and keep the flow going, but in the end I had quite a bit of difficulty, including with the tyres. A place in the top eight is a decent result for the team. I’m pleased that things went well for them this weekend at their home race. Above all, though, I’m glad that I can leave here in good health and carry on to the next race.”
