Cult car parade at the Red Bull Rennpappe: Trabants take the Sachsenring by storm

Following a fun rally through the foothills of the Ore Mountains, 50 Trabants arrived at the Sachsenring on Saturday. As part of the Red Bull Rennpappe event, the customised iconic GDR cars completed a lap of the undulating circuit with their two-stroke engines, to the applause of the DTM spectators. Afterwards, actress Claudia Schmutzler presented the ‘Golden Rennpappe’ award to the most creative Trabant.

The award pays homage to the cult car’s thermoset bodywork, colloquially known as ‘Rennpappe’. Schmutzler knows the iconic car inside out: in the hit film ‘Go Trabi Go’, she played Jacqueline, the daughter of the Struutz family.

In keeping with the theme, the cult film from 1991 was screened on Saturday evening at the drive-in cinema at the Sachsenring.

Schmutzler was delighted: “All in all, it was a lovely, relaxing event. Trabi fans are such warm-hearted people – you notice that time and again. The lap here at the Sachsenring was brilliant; I would have loved to drive round the circuit at 180 kilometres per hour. It dawned on me out on the track: in my next life, I’ll be a racing driver.”
