Polish Championship: Kacper Woryna in superb form – disaster for Zmarzlik

Bartosz Zmarzlik was crowned the winner at the opening round of the Polish Championship in Toruń, but the world champion can safely write off the second final race after scoring just four points. The evening in Bydgoszcz had got off to a good start for Zmarzlik with a heat win, but after a crash right at the start of the fifth heat, things went from bad to worse for him. After finishing last in two heats, the 31-year-old managed to scrape together a fourth point when he crossed the line behind Maciej Janowski and Jakub Jamrog in the final heat, ending the day’s racing in 14th place.

Following Zmarzlik’s disastrous evening, it was clear that the Szczecin rider would lose the championship lead; this was snatched by Kacper Woryna, who put in a fabulous performance. The winner of the Landshut GP came through the heats unbeaten and opted for the outside starting position in the final. After the start, Woryna entered the first corner in last place, but found a gap between Wiktor Przyjemski and Patryk Dudek, catapulted himself to the front of the field and won ahead of Krzysztof Buczkowski and Przyjemski.

Having gone into the second race of the championship eight points behind Zmarzlik, Woryna now heads into the third and decisive final race on 15 August in Ostrowo with a four-point lead over Maciej Janowski and Patryk Dudek following his convincing triumph.
