Fernando Alonso on Silverstone and Spa: “It’s going to be quite sad”

Fernando Alonso is known for not mincing his words. The Spaniard is consequently very popular with journalists – including those in the Silverstone paddock. And the proud Asturian did not disappoint. Right from the first question about the long-awaited Aston Martin upgrade and its significance for his decision on whether to continue his Grand Prix career, he provided some entertainment.

“I don’t know, I’ll give it some thought during the summer break. But yes, I can’t say that it’s really related. Whether the car is good or bad – there are other factors I’m taking into consideration as well. Maybe the car is brilliant, but you get the feeling that the sport is heading in the wrong direction,” the two-time champion dismissed the idea.

“Wonderful circuits like Spa or Silverstone, which used to be simply stunning, will probably feel different,” Alonso continued. “Silverstone was probably the best circuit for the winged cars. This year it’ll be completely different, and it won’t be any fun. Judging by our experiences in the simulator, it’s really sad – for both the drivers and the spectators,” warned the 32-time Grand Prix winner.

“But it could also turn out quite differently; perhaps the car isn’t that much better because of the upgrade, but maybe there’ll be another upgrade or a completely different concept for next year, which makes me think I want to be part of it in the coming years. It certainly helps if the car is better – there’s no doubt about that. It would, of course, be good if I could have a good race in Budapest before the summer break on 1 August. But that won’t be the only deciding factor,” added the 44-year-old.
