FIA embarrassment: Pierre Gasly and Alpine get back 3rd place in Monaco!

The FIA has successfully defended itself against two time penalties for Pierre Gasly. The Frenchman crossed the finish line of the Monaco GP in third place behind Kimi Antonelli and Lewis Hamilton, but was demoted to seventh place due to two five-second penalties for speeding in the pit lane. Isack Hadjar thus claimed his first podium finish for Red Bull Racing.

However, five days after the Monaco GP, the stewards have to admit they made a mistake: The penalty for Gasly was not justified. Alpine had made use of the so-called right to reconsideration, when a racing team can appeal against an FIA penalty if valid reasons are presented.

The reasons for the judgement are extremely extensive, we will spare you these seven pages. The key point is that Alpine was able to prove that Gasly was never travelling faster than the permitted 60 km/h. In fact, the incorrect measurement was due to the FIA measuring the pit lane 77 cm incorrectly.

No further penalties will be cancelled - because Oscar Piastri and George Russell already served them in the Grand Prix.

Alpine said: "We welcome the FIA's decision to declare our Right of Review admissible after the final classification of the Monaco Grand Prix last weekend."
