Juan Pablo Montoya on Aston Martin: “Then they can win everything”

After seven rounds of the World Championship, the Aston Martin team sits second from bottom in the team standings – only newcomers Cadillac have fared worse than the Silverstone-based team, who celebrated their first World Championship point of the year in Monaco. This point was scored by former champion Fernando Alonso, who has his hands full with the underperforming GP car from the Green team.

This is another reason why there is already talk of the two-time champion’s next team move. According to the latest paddock rumours, the 44-year-old could return to the Alpine team, where his manager Flavio Briatore holds the reins as a special adviser. But would the move be advisable? Juan Pablo Montoya has a clear answer to that question.

Juan Pablo Montoya: “I’d put my money on Aston Martin”

The former F1 star said in an interview with the online bookmaker ‘BetVictor’: “There’s a strong rumour doing the rounds that Fernando Alonso is heading to Alpine. But what are the chances that Aston Martin will really get it right next year? If I had to bet my money, I’d back Aston. They have a better chance than Alpine.”

The Colombian knows: “Alpine have done a brilliant job this year. But Adrian Newey will make the difference at Aston Martin. If he gets it right, they can win everything. That’s what’s expected of him, too.” And he predicts: “I don’t think Aston Martin will have to wait another year for that to happen. It’ll happen sooner than that.” The 50-year-old adds: “It wouldn’t surprise me if Aston started beating Alpine towards the end of the year. But the harsh truth for Alonso is that he’ll probably have to make up his mind before then.”
