Lewis Hamilton calls it “dangerous”: afraid of driving a Lego car?

Just as in Miami last year, a lap by the Formula 1 drivers in Lego cars is planned again this weekend at Silverstone. Instead of the usual drivers’ parade before the Grand Prix – where the drivers are usually driven around the circuit on an open-top lorry whilst giving interviews and greeting the fans – they are set to get behind the wheel themselves at Silverstone – in 22 single-seaters built from Lego bricks, that is, the famous building blocks for children and adults who enjoy making things.

Last year in Miami, the Lego drivers’ parade made its debut, at that time featuring two-seaters, each driven by one driver per team. The ‘race’ went down a treat with drivers and fans alike, with the drivers engaging in wheel-to-wheel duels – or rather, brick-to-brick duels.

Hamilton: Is the Lego lap the most dangerous part of the weekend?

Most drivers are thrilled about the Lego comeback at Silverstone. But not everyone is looking forward to it. Lewis Hamilton at the press conference ahead of his home race: “That’s the most dangerous part of the weekend. Last time I let Charles (Leclerc, ed.) have a go, and it was really funny to see everyone crashing into each other.” He then added vaguely: “I don’t know if I’ll be sitting in a Lego car this year.” When pressed on the matter, he brushes it off: “There’s not much to say about the car business. That’s something I need to take offline.” In other words, discuss it away from the cameras...

Is Lewis Hamilton perhaps afraid of the Lego race? One thing is clear: driving yourself just a few hours before the Grand Prix is more stressful than standing on an open-top lorry. And although the Lego cars are glued and nailed together, bricks broke off in Miami because the drivers were full of playful spirit and still went at it with relative gusto (the cars only go at about 40 km/h). According to our colleagues at the Daily Mail, the reason behind the cautious comments is that the drivers aren’t being paid extra for the Lego laps. On Sunday morning, we’ll find out whether the red Lego Ferrari bearing the number 44 will roll out at Silverstone...
