From 2028: Sustainable fuel mandated by the FIA in GT3 racing

Amendments to the technical regulations for the GT3 class, which are in line with the sustainability roadmap previously set out by the Commission, were approved by the FIA World Motor Sport Council in Macau.

These include a requirement to use only sustainable fuel in all GT3 competitions from 2028 onwards. This change is in line with the introduction of sustainable fuel in the FIA GT World Cup in 2024. Other top-tier GT3 championships, such as the DTM, the ADAC GT Masters and the GT World Challenge, are already using sustainable fuel.

Furthermore, from 2028, all tyres used in GT3 competitions must contain at least 20 per cent sustainable materials, which must be derived from biological sources and/or be recycled. This follows on from the recent appointment of the tyre supplier for the FIA WEC’s LMGT3 class, in which tyres made from 66 per cent sustainable materials will be used in the 2027, 2028 and 2029 seasons. Pirelli is also already using sustainable materials in its current generation of tyres for GT3 racing.

These changes represent the next step in the FIA’s long-term strategy to increase sustainability in GT racing whilst maintaining the current level of performance, cost and competitiveness within the class.
