Lamborghini driver Maximilian Paul: Long break following surgery

Many questions remain unanswered following Maximilian Paul’s serious crash in Saturday’s race at the Norisring. What is clear is that the Dresden-born driver “will be out of action for months. It will take time for him to regain the strength in his leg needed for braking,” team boss Gottfried Grasser told SPEEDWEEK.

The Styrian also had some positive news: “Maximilian underwent surgery on Sunday morning. Everything went well.” And he could rule out mechanical failure as the cause of the accident. It was the oil spill that proved to be Paul’s undoing.

But what happens next is completely up in the air. What is certain is that GRT will field two Lamborghini Temerarios at Oschersleben as well: “The car is badly damaged, but the cockpit is intact. It should hold out until the next DTM race,” says Grasser. It is not yet clear who will replace Paul in the DTM and GT World Challenge over the coming months: “That’s the least of our worries right now. Lamborghini will have a say in the decision. To be honest, I haven’t given it any thought yet.” GRT must bear the costs of the crash alone.

Regardless of the DTM concerns, Gottfried Grasser is looking forward to his own racing comeback: “I’ll be competing in the ADAC GT Masters at the Nürburgring and the Salzburgring alongside Gerhard Tweraser. As far as I know, this is a first: two Austrians in an Austrian team,” says the 47-year-old.
