Lando Norris fuming after P3 in the British Sprint: “Can you sort this out?”

A lacklustre performance from 26-year-old Formula 1 champion Lando Norris in the entertaining Sprint at Silverstone. The Englishman was clearly beaten by Kimi Antonelli and Lewis Hamilton. The Briton is visibly unhappy with this, and with good reason.

During the cool-down lap, Norris came over the radio sounding rather grumpy: “Can you sort this out, lads?”

What had his McLaren team done to deserve this question? The answer: during the Sprint, Norris had been instructed over the radio to keep an eye on his fuel. It seems the fuel load had been calculated a little too aggressively.

In his initial interviews, Norris avoided the sensitive topic and put on a brave face: “I’m very happy with my third place. I had a brilliant start from P6 and a very good first lap, followed by a solid pace. But unfortunately, that wasn’t enough to keep up with the top two. On the plus side, there was a really fun battle with George Russell. I’m pleasantly surprised at how that went.”

“But that’s just a sprint; in a few hours we’ll be back at it for the GP qualifying. The car feels better than it did on Friday, but I’ve still got a few ideas on how we can improve further for qualifying. Because let’s be honest – the good result came about because I got off to such a great start and had a brilliant first lap. Towards the end, I had to be incredibly careful because of Russell; I had my hands full with the car.”

Let’s be honest: could Norris have been up there with the leaders here without the fuel problem? Norris was frank: “No, Kimi and Lewis were too quick for that; their cars are in a different league to ours. But perhaps it would have been easier for me to keep Russell at a bit greater a distance.”
