Nico Hülkenberg (Audi) on Baku: “The situation can change quickly”

Can Nico Hülkenberg carry the momentum from the Madrid weekend through to Baku? In the Spanish capital, the Audi driver finished 10th, securing one point. It may not sound like much, but in the tight battle at the bottom of the standings, it could prove decisive for his position in the long run. Can the German score points again in the Azerbaijani capital?

There’s a chance of points!

Ahead of the race on the Caspian Sea – which, for once, is taking place on Saturday – Hülkenberg says: “We’ve been consistently fighting for points over the last few weekends, and that’s where we want to stay. Baku is one of those circuits where the situation can change quickly. So if we get everything right and have a flawless weekend, opportunities should arise. We have to assume that the battle for our positions will be pretty tight, just as it has been in recent races, so we need to execute everything well.”

The circuit in Baku is known for the fact that anything is possible and things can quickly become chaotic. The other German behind the wheel in Formula 1, safety car driver Bernd Mayländer, can start warming up: a safety car phase is almost guaranteed in Baku. That opens up possibilities – provided you’re not the unfortunate driver who’s hit the wall. Because, as we all know, the walls are always close by in Baku.

Busy weeks lie ahead

Audi’s racing director, Allan McNish, says, looking ahead to the Azerbaijan Grand Prix and the subsequent GPs: “Baku is the first of three races in a row, so it’s going to be a few busy weeks for everyone – not least because these are three physically very demanding races for both the drivers and the teams.” After Baku, the action moves to Malaysia, where the Bahrain Grand Prix will be rescheduled, and then on to Singapore. So it’s a long journey and a tropical climate. McNish: “Our focus will be on doing our job well, continuing to improve and putting ourselves in the best possible position to be in the mix for more points.”
