Agius (Intact GP): Tribute to late crew chief didn’t bring any luck

The Australian Senna Agius was the unlucky one in the Moto2 race at Misano, having been taken out in the very first corner by the over-eager Spaniard Angel Piqueras. It was a bitter blow: pole-setter Agius had the pace to take the win. “The positives from this weekend outweigh what happened on Sunday, because there’s no time to be angry or upset about what happened,” said the 21-year-old afterwards. “I’ll take that mindset with me into FP1 in Austria and carry on there where we left off here. That’s my attitude for the rest of the season, and we’ll always do our best to make up as many points as possible.”

The aspiring MotoGP rider Agius – who could be riding a KTM Tech3 as early as the day after the event at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg during the Pirelli test there – had devised a special, emotional tribute to his late crew chief Roberto Lunadei specifically for Misano.

In just a few months, Agius had built up a very close relationship with the passionate Italian. That’s why he lined up for the race at Misano wearing a special helmet design from his brand, LS2, which depicted the entire history of his collaboration with the Italian. Lunadei had died in a road traffic accident in the spring.

Fireworks and commemorative photos

‘I thought long and hard about how I could commemorate Roby on my helmet at his home Grand Prix and how I could make him proud. I’d had this idea for several months and had been thinking about how to express it on the helmet. The design features fireworks, which are meant to represent his character. You often didn’t know what you were going to get. He was always brilliant – he was a living firework, a real Italian firework,” said Agius, describing his former crew chief.

The helmet also features photos arranged to look like a roll of film. “One of the photos shows Roby winning at Vallelunga many years ago. Then there are a few lovely photos of our first victory and our first day working together,” explained Agius. “We had a special bond: when we first met, he could barely speak English; my Italian, unfortunately, hasn’t improved – but his English certainly has. We became very close. It’s sad, and that’s why I want to honour his memory – I think we’ve managed that quite well.”
