Moto2 qualifying at Misano: Intact’s record-breaking charge sees Agius on pole

The sun has come out on the Adriatic coast! The decisive Moto2 qualifying session, held as the support programme for the MotoGP Sprint, took place in excellent conditions. After the Intact GP team had dominated free practice with World Championship leader Manuel Gonzalez and Senna Agius, expectations were high for the German squad. With a time of 1:34.142, Aussie Agius had also broken the lap record.

The top four from the Q1 shootout took to the track alongside the 14 fastest riders from Friday’s session. Both Italtrans riders, Munoz and Huertas, had made the cut, joined by Joe Roberts and Forward ace Alex Escrig.

Shortly after 2 pm, the Moto2 chase got underway. Izan Guevara set off late. The Pramac rider had qualified eighth for Q2, making him the fastest rider on the Italian Boscoscuro chassis. By the time Guevara was warming up, things were already in full swing. Senna Agius clocked 1:34.277 on his first lap, making him the fastest. Behind him were Dani Holgado (Aspar) and Dani Muñoz (Italtrans). Manuel Gonzalez briefly made his mark. His time of 1:34.084 meant that the lap record was now held by the championship leader.

Arbolino, Agius, Holgado, Veijer and Ortola followed within 0.275 seconds of each other. David Alonso was also setting a fast pace. However, the Colombian – and future Honda MotoGP rider – had his fastest lap disallowed as he had strayed outside the track limits.

With five minutes remaining, Manuel Gonzalez took to the track for his final push. Senna Agius had already gone on the attack earlier. The youngster reclaimed the record: 1:33.996 mins! At the same time, a crash involving two riders occurred. Alberto Ferrandez had crashed, whilst Alonso skidded over the Pramac riders’ bikes. Both riders walked away from the scene of the accident unaided.

Once the yellow flag had been withdrawn, Dani Holgado stunned the field. The Aspar rider was a further eight hundredths of a second faster. But Agius wasn’t about to let that stand and countered in his final attempt with a spectacular 1:33.718 min.

Behind Holgado in second place, a rookie – Angel Piqueras – had surprisingly squeezed his way through. Manuel Gonzalez was pushed down to sixth place by Dani Munoz. Guevara fared even worse, finishing eighth and once again proving to be the best Boscoscuro rider. Just how fiercely contested the Moto2 race was is shown by the fact that the top seven all finished under last year’s circuit record. Second place (Holgado) and 16th (Vietti) were separated by just 0.6 seconds, with the best possible outcome for four Spaniards, one Dutchman and the flying Australian Senna Agius on the first two rows of the grid.

Following the familiar format, the 14th race in the middle category of the World Championship will take place on Sunday after the Moto3 youngsters and before the premier class – the start time is 12.15 pm.
