FP2, Mandalika: Red flag after Toprak’s crash, Aprilia still on top

At the start of the Indonesian Grand Prix, what all non-Aprilia riders had feared came to pass. Three RS-GP riders, led by Raúl Fernández, had pulled clear of the competition, with KTM rider Pedro Acosta in their wake. World Champion Marc Márquez was the highest-placed Ducati rider, finishing in 5th place, though some way off the lead.

In the 30-minute second free practice session, things initially continued in much the same way as the Indonesian Grand Prix had begun on Lombok.

Ten minutes in, there was a shock for the Pramac team led by rookie Toprak Razgatlioglu. ‘El Turco’ initially lost grip on his front tyre in Turn 13, but what was a relatively minor slide turned into a horrific crash. The M1 regained grip at the rear, re-erected itself and sent the Superbike champion hurtling into the air. Razgatlioglu had to be treated briefly at the scene, and the red flags were waved. The good news: the rider was taken to the Yamaha pit rather than the medical centre. At the time of the crash, Razgatlioglu was running in 15th place.

No sooner had the track reopened than Aprilia’s strength became even more apparent, with Jorge Martin moving into second place. Behind him were Acosta, Marc Marquez and Marco Bezzecchi.  The track. Ten minutes before the end of FP2, the picture became even clearer. Bezzecchi knocked Fernández off the top spot with the first 1:29 lap, whilst Ai Ogura moved into fourth place: positions 1–4 were all held by Aprilia. But Marc Márquez showed that number 93 also had good pace. Trailing by 0.253 seconds, the world champion squeezed into second place. At the same time, Aleix Espargaró had also slid out. The Spaniard emerged unscathed.

Impressive: Marco Bezzecchi improved lap after lap, rode flawlessly and finished in the lead with a time of 1:29.560 minutes – ahead of Raúl Fernández, who had lapped the Trackhouse Aprilia just 0.174 seconds slower in the final session. Marc Marquez finished FP2 0.311 seconds ahead of Fabio Di Giannantonio, championship leader Jorge Martin and KTM hero Pedro Acosta.

Meanwhile, it became clear that Toprak Razgatlioglu had dislocated his shoulder. He was taken to the circuit hospital for a further examination. Number 07 finished the session in 19th place.
