Johnny Herbert: A plea for Formula 1’s return to Germany

It is a wish shared by many Formula 1 fans: the return of the premier class to Germany has been a recurring topic ever since the last race was held on German soil during the 2020 coronavirus season. And this is not just among spectators, but also amongst those in charge of the sport, as Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali explained during his post-race press conference following the Hungarian Grand Prix.

When asked about the likelihood of a German Grand Prix comeback, the Italian said: “We have re-established contact with the operators of the Hockenheimring and initial discussions have taken place.” Domenicali made it clear that a return would require investment, which would need to be made. He also emphasised that a return would not be possible in the short term, but rather in the medium term.

This is good news for many German Formula 1 fans, but also for spectators from other countries. Johnny Herbert is one of them. The former Grand Prix driver explained in an interview with “Vision4Sport”: “The only place where I would like to see a race return is Germany. It would be brilliant if either Hockenheim or the Nürburgring were to be included in the racing calendar again.”

Financial difficulties

“That would also be important for us as European fans. Motorsport has always enjoyed enormous support from German fans there, especially back when Michael Schumacher was still racing. Now it’s all about Mercedes’ success,” says the Briton, adding: “Germany has always been a very important part of the history of motorsport and Formula 1. And, of course, Michael was the central figure for a long time. It’s a shame we’re not returning there. It’s unbelievable.”

The reason for Germany’s absence from the Formula 1 world map is easy to spot. “I think the problem is purely financial. As far as I can remember, Hockenheim has always struggled to pay the F1 entry fee required to host the Grand Prix. Hockenheim and even the Nürburgring have always had financial difficulties, particularly the Nürburgring. Over the years, there have been many events that have made a loss,” explains Herbert.
