Fabio di Giannantonio carrying an injury: a race against time ahead of Mandalika

Following the collision in the sprint race, Fabio di Giannantonio was in pain during the MotoGP at Motegi. He has only a few days left to recover before the crucial home race organised by VR46’s main sponsor, Pertamina.

Right up until the Sprint, it looked as though Fabio di Giannantonio was set for a good weekend at the MotoGP event in Motegi. In Q2, the Italian was just 0.257 seconds off the fastest time and secured 6th on the grid. However, on the very first lap of the MotoGP Sprint, the VR46 rider was caught up, through no fault of his own, in the crash caused by Alex Márquez. The collision brought his Sprint to an end and also hampered his performance in the Grand Prix.

In the crash, di Giannantonio took a heavy blow to the right side of his body. His hopes of feeling better after a night’s rest were not realised. On Sunday, he rode in pain and was unable to match the pace he had shown in qualifying. He finished 18th, 50.8 seconds behind the leader and outside the points.

More than 50 seconds behind in the Grand Prix

“My physical condition is far from ideal. I expected it to be better after a night’s rest. But that wasn’t the case. I was already struggling to ride comfortably this morning,” explained the Ducati rider.

Above all, the after-effects of the crash hampered him on the bike. “The right side in particular caused problems. That was the side where I took the impact. It’s not 100 per cent. I found it difficult even in the morning to ride naturally. I found it hard to ride normally. That’s why it was a very difficult day.”

Bad timing: Mandalika particularly important for VR46

Di Giannantonio doesn’t have much time to recover. The MotoGP continues in Mandalika as early as next weekend. As well as the journey from Japan to Indonesia, there are additional commitments to attend to there. The event holds special significance for the VR46 team: their main sponsor, Pertamina, is based in Indonesia.

“I have to try and recover as well as possible. As always, the schedule is very tight when it comes to flights and events. I’ll try to recover as best I can so that I’m fit again for Mandalika,” explained di Giannantonio.

Just ahead of this crucial weekend, the Italian must now work on regaining his full riding ability. It remains to be seen how much of his physical deficit he can make up by the start of practice. However, he leaves no doubt about his motivation for the sponsor’s home race: “It’s obviously hugely important for Pertamina, but for us too. We want to do well at their event. I’ll give it my all.”
