Official: Coenen brothers to move to the US in 2027; no start in Ironman

The Coenen brothers’ original plans seemed to have been thrown into disarray following the events of the 2026 season. As World Championship leaders in both classes, their guest appearances in the USA took a sudden turn: Sacha broke his collarbone but still won the 250 class. Lucas took such a heavy tumble in the first 450 race at Southwick that he was unable to compete in the second race. A few days later, Lucas crashed again in the MXGP qualifying race at Foxhills (England), was sidelined with a hip injury and lost the World Championship lead. Up until that point, he had clearly dominated the class.

Supercross and Motocross

The Belgian twins have now signed a multi-year contract. Next year, Lucas will compete in the 450cc class in both Supercross and Motocross. Sacha will ride the 250cc KTM. It has not yet been decided whether he will race on the East or West Coast.

Statement from the Coenen brothers

“2027 will be a big change for the family,” explained Lucas, “but it’s a dream to take this step.” Sacha Coenen, trailing the MX2 World Championship leader by 25 points, still has a chance to clinch the title in the final three Grands Prix. “We still have big goals for the rest of the MX2 World Championship this year. Now we can focus on that goal and also prepare for 2027. There’ll be a lot to learn, but that’s what we want to do. It’s really cool to have this opportunity. I can’t wait.”

Season finale at Ironman

Originally, the Coenen brothers were planning to compete in the US Nationals season finale at Ironman this coming weekend. Sacha Coenen will definitely not be taking part. The reason is the ongoing MX2 title race. Sacha wants to focus on the final three Grands Prix. As for Lucas Coenen, however, his participation has not yet been definitively ruled out. His physical condition is a question mark, which suggests he is unlikely to compete in the US again.
