Departures, transfers and promotions: the Moto2 line-up for 2027 is almost complete

Despite the technical basis remaining unchanged, there are also a number of changes in the middleweight class ahead of the 2027 season. SPEEDWEEK.com reports on the latest developments from the Moto2 paddock.

Whilst the MotoGP field was still taking shape, a number of key decisions were also being made in the middleweight class. In keeping with the principle that speed prevails, the top spots were largely decided early on. That said, the special case of ‘Gonzalez’ certainly had an impact on the Moto2 transfer market. It was only once it became clear that, unlike Guevara, Alonso, Holgado and Agius, the championship leader would not be moving up to the premier class that planning could continue at the highly sought-after Intact GP team from Germany.

It is now confirmed that David Almansa will line up alongside Gonzalez next year. The Spaniard is moving up from within the team. It is worth noting that if Manuel Gonzalez wins the title in 2026, the current world champions will be racing against each other in 2027, as Moto3 dominator Maximo Quiles (whose title win is only a matter of time) will also be competing in Moto2. Quiles has also been promoted from within, joining the equally high-calibre CF Moto team led by Jorge ‘Aspar’ Martinez. Quiles will have one of Moto2’s big names as his team-mate: Celestino Vietti is moving from Luca Boscoscuro’s team to the Aspar camp.

The rider line-up has also been finalised at the Boscoscuro camp. The Italian manufacturer is once again fielding an all-Italian pairing of Luca Lunetta and Guido Pini, who joins from Moto3 (Leopard).

As things stand, only three teams will manage without any changes to their line-ups. Although not yet confirmed, Joe Roberts will also be racing alongside Filip Salac in 2027. It will be the Californian’s tenth season. Consistency is also the order of the day at Red Bull KTM Ajo. Collin Veijer and Jose-Antonio Rueda are staying on. It will be the Spaniard’s second Moto2 campaign, and Veijer’s third year. Plus: Angel Piqueras and World Championship bronze medallist Ivan Ortola will once again be riding a Kalex in MSi colours.

Aron Canet returns to Fantic Racing in 2027

Familiar faces will be on display at the Fantic team, also based in Italy. Barry Baltus has signed a two-year contract extension with Roberto Locatelli. The team has also brought back a former colleague in Aron Canet.

Canet is currently racing alongside Deniz Öncü for the Belgian Marc-VDS team, which – according to unofficial reports – will no longer be in the Grand Prix paddock in 2027. The team’s focus is now solely on the Superbike World Championship.

Both Marc-VDS riders have other commitments. Canet’s contract has been terminated, whilst Öncü is moving to the Dutch RW team. The second seat here is one of the few positions still up for grabs. Among those in the running is youngster and Moto2 European Champion Milan Pawelec. However, Zonta van der Goordbergh and Ayumu Sasaki are not yet out of the running either.

The line-up at Forward Racing is particularly noteworthy. The third Moto2 manufacturer, which had long been trailing far behind but made remarkable progress in 2026, has signed Grand Prix winner Tony Arbolino (currently with Fantic). The number 2 spot on the mint-coloured Forward bike has gone to Adrian Huertas, who has to leave Italtrans.

There has been a swap of riders here. Instead of Huertas, Alex Escrig – who is still active for Forward – will be riding there. The Spaniard Daniel Muñoz remains with the 2025 world champion team.

Pramac Racing, currently chasing the Moto2 title with Izan Guevara, will replace Guevara – who has been promoted from within the team to MotoGP – with a Moto3 rider: Alvaro Carpe joins from the KTM-Ajo organisation. The Spaniard Alberto Ferrandez has been given a second year with Pramac.

This brings the total to eleven teams and 22 riders. One team will be dropping out, leaving two teams with question marks – Gresini Racing and Honda Asia. Alonso Lopez remains under discussion for Gresini’s sub-MotoGP structure. The second spot could be filled by Intact Moto2 rider David Muñoz.

As the team name suggests, Honda Asia’s participation is considered a certainty. Taiyo Furusato will continue to be supported and has been given a second season with Hiroshi Aoyama. In the medium term, Veda Pratama is also set to compete in Moto2, but in 2027 the Indonesian hero will once again race in Moto3. This leaves his compatriot Mario Aji in a strong position for another year.

It is understood that two current Moto2 riders will no longer be competing following the withdrawal of Marc VDS, meaning there will be just 26 regular riders active. Sergio Garcia (Gresini) and the two RW Racing riders are currently causing concern for 2027.
