Manuel Gonzalez (4th) had to admit: “I lacked the necessary speed”

Although Manuel Gonzalez was unable to win the Moto2 race at the Red Bull Ring, his fourth-place finish earned him vital points for the championship.

But first things first: the championship leader started the race from second on the front row. He got off to a good start, but was overtaken by several rivals in the melee at the chicane. He then settled into fifth place. The Intact rider then put in a solid performance, though he was never in contention for the top places. Gonzalez crossed the finish line in fourth place.

“It was a much tougher race than we’d expected. On Friday and Saturday we still had a really strong pace, but on Sunday our pace was slower. That’s why I couldn’t fight for the top places,” Gonzalez had to admit. “I got off to a really good start, but then I started sliding badly in the chicane and lots of riders overtook me. I tried to make up positions, but I lacked the necessary speed to do so. Given the circumstances, we have to view fourth place in a positive light.”

Gonzalez: Still 35.5 points clear

Izan Guevara won the race at Spielberg. The Pramac Yamaha rider managed to close the gap on Gonzalez by 12 points in the overall standings. With seven races remaining this season, Gonzalez still leads by 35.5 points.

“Of course, we always want more, but we haven’t lost too many points. So we’ll keep fighting and learn from the tougher races,” said Manuel Gonzalez. “We’ll try to be right up there at the front again in Japan. Before we head overseas, I’d first like to thank the whole team for their tireless efforts.”
