Lucas and Sacha Coenen (KTM) on their US trip: “That was our dream!”

The appearance of the Coenen twins, Lucas and Sacha, at the US Motocross Series last weekend generated a huge buzz. Even before the races in Lakewood, Colorado, all eyes were on the Belgian brothers, who currently lead the MX2 and MXGP World Championship classes. Clothing supplier Fly Racing presented a retro collection for the Belgians in the style of their legendary compatriot Roger DeCoster, who has been a highly successful racing boss at KTM USA in Supercross and Motocross for many years.

The Italian helmet partner Airoh produced special open-face helmets for the pair in the same style that DeCoster once used. For the group photo in the KTM marquee, icon DeCoster even conjured up an original Suzuki shirt from the 1970s. For Lucas, race day in the 450 class went very well with two second places, despite a few hiccups. His brother Sacha went down twice in the first 250cc race, but got his own back in the second race with a commanding victory.

“It was incredible!” marvelled MXGP World Championship leader Lucas Coenen. “My start wasn’t good in race 1, but I got through the first corner quickly and then really enjoyed it. I can’t thank the team enough for the opportunity, and on top of that to ride in Roger DeCoster’s design – simply wonderful! I soaked up every lap. The second race was a bit hectic because of a few riders being lapped. But what the heck – I’m racing against the best guys here and it’s great fun! Now it’s back to the MXGP and we’ll see when we can come back here again in the future.”

His brother Sacha impressed with a comfortable victory in the second heat. “I’m really happy I got to come here – that was our dream! It’s become a reality and my second race was really good too. I got off to a good start and my riding was flawless. The first race hurts a bit, but we have to accept that – I’m just really happy with the second one. It’s great for my confidence and good to know that I can win a race here.” The World Championship season continues this coming weekend in Montevarchi, Italy.
