MotoGP champion Marc Marquez (Ducati Lenovo) has taken the lead in the world championship following his one-two finish at Misano. The 33-year-old’s performance last weekend on the Italian Adriatic coast was impressive. Alex Marquez (Gresini Ducati) finished second after staging a strong comeback from ninth on the grid.
But it wasn’t just the Marquez brothers and Ducati who had every reason to celebrate at Misano; KTM, too, could be pleased with the performances of its four RC16 riders. Leading the way was Pedro Acosta, who raced from seventh on the grid onto the podium. Enea Bastianini (8th), Brad Binder (11th) and Viñales’ replacement Pol Espargaró (14th) also put in decent races. As a result, all four KTM riders finished in the points on Sunday.
KTM’s head of racing, Pit Beirer, didn’t have much time to celebrate, as on Monday evening the German was a guest on the ServusTV programme ‘Sport und Talk aus dem Hangar-7’, where he joined Alex Marquez and Brad Binder to look ahead to the MotoGP weekend in Spielberg (18–20 September).

But you simply have to have so much respect for the way he keeps fighting his way back from injuries – even though he’s currently hampered – and still puts in this kind of performance – that’s really something special. He always has that little bit extra. And if anyone thinks their turn has come, he pushes himself that bit harder. I certainly think he’ll be a tough nut to crack for the lads who still want to turn things round.”
Speaking of opponents: next year, KTM will have at least one Marquez on an RC16 – Alex, who is, after all, the runner-up in the world championship.
