It was a very early comeback for the 31-year-old's injuries. He had suffered fractures to his shoulder blade and ribs as well as injuries to his shoulder tendons. "We have to pay Miguel the highest respect this weekend. What he achieved was truly outstanding," said race director Sven Blusch, who was impressed. "We didn't expect him to be able to set these times, to finish in the top 10, and almost even in the top 5. He was in a lot of pain and not yet 100 per cent fit, but under the circumstances he more than made the most of it. It was the right decision for him to abandon the last race early. It simply wouldn't have made sense to take any more risks."
"His qualifying was already very strong," added Head of Engineering Chris Gonschor. "The first race on Saturday was impressive due to the physical limitations. The Superpole race was absolutely outstanding with a brilliant sixth place in severe pain. Even though he finished the second race prematurely, we were able to see the potential of the bike and the rider."
There is a three-week break until the next Superbike meeting at Donington Park, by which time Oliveira will be in better shape and Petrucci is also likely to return.
"When Miguel is fully recovered, we will be fighting for the podium again," Gonschor is certain. "We are now focussing on the next few weeks. Hopefully Danilo will be back in Donington and Miguel will be even stronger."
