Danilo Petrucci returns: What sort of bike will BMW provide him with?

When Danilo Petrucci agreed a contract with BMW in the summer of 2025 for the 2026 World Championship, with an option for 2027, he was sitting in third place in the World Championship as a Ducati privateer with the Barni team. He then broke his right hand whilst training at the gym and ultimately finished the season in fifth place.

BMW signed Petrucci and five-time MotoGP winner Miguel Oliveira as the two best riders available at the time to replace World Champion Toprak Razgatlioglu – the Turkish rider had moved to Yamaha and into MotoGP – as well as Michael van der Mark.

It quickly became clear that Oliveira was much more at home on the BMW; the Portuguese rider secured four podium finishes up until his crash through no fault of his own on 3 May in Hungary, and made a comeback at Misano last weekend with a very valiant performance. Petrucci was injured in mid-May at Brüx (Most) and fractured his coccyx – a protracted and very painful ordeal. The veteran rider will return to the bike on 23 June and test alongside Oliveira at Donington Park, where the next SBK round takes place in mid-July.

BMW is not resorting to knee-jerk reactions

Petrux’s best result of the season so far: 6th place in the second main race in Australia. In Italy, there have long been calls for BMW to accommodate Petrucci more with the M1000RR. Technical director Chris Gonschor is not, however, resorting to knee-jerk reactions. “Once Danilo is fit and back on the bike, we’ll resume working with him,” explained the keen amateur footballer. “It wouldn’t be professional to judge right now what he’ll need when he returns. Following his serious injury, we need his feedback so that we can then provide him with a bike that he finds easier to ride. I can only say what solutions we’ll need for him in future when the time comes.”

“It would be difficult to change the approach we’ve taken straight after an injury,” Gonschor noted. “You pick up where you left off to have a point of reference. Then adjustments may follow to demonstrate the full potential of the rider and the motorbike working together. But it’s essential to start where he left off. Otherwise, you get bogged down in speculation and stop working on the basis of facts.”

Petrucci is under pressure: if BMW does not exercise its option on him for 2027, he will not secure a place with any other Superbike works team. To convince the German manufacturer of his qualities, the 35-year-old needs to deliver tangible results as soon as possible. If he fails to do so, he will lose his place to a current MotoGP rider who cannot find a seat in the premier class for next year.
