Honda’s top test rider Jonathan Rea takes Somkiat Chantra under his wing

Since retiring as a regular Superbike rider, Jonathan Rea has been busier than he probably expected. After the Northern Irishman had recovered from his knee injury – the result of a crash at the season finale in Jerez – he took up a role as a test rider for Honda Racing Corporation and competed at the rounds in Portimão and Assen as a replacement for the injured Jake Dixon. The record-holding world champion is set to make a guest appearance at the Donington Park round.

However, Rea is even more excited to be taking part in the legendary Suzuka 8h this coming weekend. On the one hand, this fascinating event at the Honda-owned circuit has captivated the 39-year-old; and, secondly, the CBR1000RR-R, in its Suzuka specification and fitted with Bridgestone tyres, is capable of winning – something that cannot currently be said of the Superbike machine.

Rea is teaming up with Takumi Takahashi and Somkiat Chantra – the second Superbike regular rider. The trio have completed the first two days of practice on the 5.8 km circuit. As expected, the Honda works team secured top positions in both dry and wet conditions.

“I’m pleased with our work over these two days. Whatever the weather is like on Sunday, we’ll at least be prepared for both conditions,” Rea emphasised. “As for the team, I’m really looking forward to sharing the pit with Somkiat and Takumi. Chantra is doing really well. He’s been getting faster step by step and made a very impressive showing this morning. Of course, I try to help him whenever I can, as I have a lot of experience and this is his first time at Suzuka. He has the talent to be fast, but sometimes I can give him tips on the bike, the conditions or the track.”

Somkiat Chantra on Suzuka-Honda

For the Thai rider, taking part is both an honour and an opportunity. Experience shows that Suzuka winners can be sure of Honda’s favour.

“When I arrived here, I felt a certain amount of pressure,” Chantra admitted. “But Jonathan and Takumi really helped me to stay calm and take things step by step. Takumi has a lot of experience here and Jonathan knows Suzuka very well too, so I’m really looking forward to sharing the pit with them. The team were brilliant as well. The bike was already well prepared and I felt at home on it straight away. I didn’t have to change much; I could just get on the bike and set off.”
