Test run for Donington: Danilo Petrucci (BMW) warms up at Mugello

Following a heavy crash in the first race at Most, Danilo Petrucci was sidelined for a long time with a broken coccyx and an injured knee, and could only watch from the sidelines at the Superbike rounds in Aragon and Misano. “I’m still having trouble bending my knee fully,” the Italian explained two weeks ago when he announced he would be sitting out his home race.

Petrucci rode his BMW M1000RR for the first time since his injury during a one-day test at Donington Park. There, the 35-year-old not only assessed his physical condition but was also able to prepare for the race weekend from 10 to 12 July. Petrucci urgently needs good results, as his best finish so far is sixth place in the second race in Australia, and BMW has not yet exercised its option for 2027.

To get back on track, Petrucci is making the most of every opportunity that comes his way. Last weekend, for example, the veteran made a surprise appearance at the Coppa Italia in Mugello, though he only took part in Friday’s free practice sessions. According to information from Corsedimoto, the Italian rode an M1000RR in Superstock configuration for the BMW Pistard Racing team and set a best time of 1:52.920 minutes, a time that would have secured pole position for the works rider by a wide margin.
